course structure

In order to become a PADI Instructor, you must complete a two week training called the Instructor Development Course (IDC).  IDCs are conducted together with our partner, Course Director Yann Guillet of Sawasdee Divers, Ao Nang.  Upon completion of the IDC, you will complete the PADI Instructor Exam (IE) over a period of two days.  The IE consists of the following components:

  • Written exams regarding dive theory and PADI General Standards
  • One academic presentation on an assigned topic
  • One confined water skills presentation and evaluation
  • Five demonstrations of confined water skills
  • Demonstration of Rescue Exercise 7 (unresponsive diver at the surface)
  • Two open water skills presentations and evaluations

The main purpose of the two-week IDC is to prepare you with adequate practice in each of these areas.  Our IDCs go beyond this, however.  We want to ensure that you not only pass the IE, but also go on to become an excellent Instructor.  That is why we far exceed the minimum standards to give you extensive practice on things like skills demonstrations and academic presentations.  We will also quite frequently relate our personal experiences as working Instructors to help prepare you in similar situations.  Quite simply, we want to train the best Instructors so that we can hire them.

Materials and Equipment

As part of the IDC, you must have the latest PADI IDC Crew Pack.  This includes every resource you will need to reference and use as a working PADI Instructor.  These materials include the PADI Guide to Teach, reference slates for every course, and all course Quiz and Exam booklets.  We will order you the PADI IDC Crew Pack before you arrive.  The price can change year-to-year, but expect to pay around 19,000 THB.

As an Instructor, we highly recommend that you own a complete set of scuba diving gear.  It is pretty impossible to get work without it!  Therefore, we would prefer that you use your own gear during the IDC and IE.  Especially during the IE, you want to be using the gear you are most familiar and comfortable with.  If an extreme case arises, we will do our best to let you borrow any piece of gear you may need.  At a minimum, you will need the following equipment:

  • Mask, fins, and snorkel
  • BCD
  • Regulator with alternate air source and submersible pressure guage
  • Dive computer
  • Wetsuit or rash-guard
  • Underwater compass
  • Dive knife
  • Surface marker buoy (SMB)

If you would like to purchase any of those items here, we will order them for you from our suppliers at the best available price.
